Where these rates come from
The prices above are international market rates for pure gold and silver, converted into your currency. They update once a day and are the same rates the Zakat Compass calculator fills in for you.
Your local jeweller or bullion market will usually quote a little more or less. Shops add making charges and their own margin, and some countries add tax. Lower purities (22K, 21K, 18K) are shown here by their share of pure gold, so a shop's price for finished jewellery will often be higher.
For zakat, many scholars say to use the price you could actually sell at in your own market. If your local rate is different, type it into the calculator and it will use your number instead.
What is nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold for a full lunar year before zakat becomes due. It is set by weight: 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Its value in money changes every day with the price of gold and silver, which is why this page shows today's figure.
Some scholars and organisations round these weights to 85 grams of gold and 595 grams of silver. The difference is small, and the calculator lets you check against either metal.
Gold nisab or silver nisab?
Because silver is far cheaper than gold, the silver nisab is much lower. Using it means more people reach nisab, so more zakat reaches those in need, and many scholars, especially in the Hanafi school, recommend it for that reason. Others say the gold nisab is fine where most of your wealth is in cash or gold. If you are unsure, ask a scholar you trust; the calculator lets you choose either one.
How is zakat on gold worked out?
Add up the gold you own, by weight and purity, and work out its value at today's rate. If your total zakatable wealth, including cash and savings, is at or above nisab and has stayed there for a lunar year, zakat is 2.5% of it. For example, 10 tola of 24K gold is worth ten times the "24K, 1 tola" figure above, and 2.5% of that would be due if you are above nisab.
Whether jewellery you wear regularly is zakatable is a point where scholars differ. The calculator explains the views and uses the more cautious one by default.
