What this means for your zakat

Ahmed has had $5,000 in savings, and nothing else, every year since 2016.

Gold nisab: his savings were above it in 2016 to 2020, so zakat was due. In 2020 it was only just above ($4,978). From 2021 the gold nisab passed $5,000, so with the gold measure he no longer owed zakat on it.
Silver nisab: above it every single year, so zakat of $125 a year was due.

This is why scholars' advice on which nisab to use matters. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab, because it is lower and so more people pay zakat and more poor people benefit. Read more on the rulings and evidence page.

Because nisab changes every year, always check it on your own zakat date. The Zakat Compass calculator fills in today's nisab in your currency for you.
