Why it exists
Working out zakat should not need a spreadsheet, a finance degree, or sharing your wealth with anyone. Zakat Compass lets you add what you own and what you owe, checks whether you have reached nisab, and shows what is due in your own currency.
It works in English, Urdu, Arabic, Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia and Turkish, and in the currency of your country.
Who makes it
Zakat Compass is made by Haroon Mustafa, an independent developer in Peshawar, Pakistan, under his small studio, Haroon Studio. There is no bank, charity or company behind it. It is free to use.
How the calculations work
The calculator follows the widely accepted rule: zakat is 2.5% of your zakatable wealth, once that wealth has stayed at or above nisab for one lunar year. Nisab is the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. You choose which one to use.
Where scholars differ, for example on jewellery you wear or shares you hold long term, the site says so and gives the more cautious option by default.
Haroon is not a religious scholar, and Zakat Compass does not give fatwas. Please confirm your own case with a qualified scholar. Read the disclaimer for details.
Private by design
The numbers you type stay in your own browser on your own phone or computer. There is no account and no sign-up, and nothing you enter is sent to us. The privacy policy explains exactly what the site does.
Built for everyone
The site works on any phone, can be installed like an app, and keeps working offline once opened. It is built to work with screen readers and is checked with TalkBack on Android.
What Zakat Compass will never do
- Collect, hold or pass on your zakat money. You always pay zakat yourself, to whoever you choose.
- Push you towards a particular charity.
- Ask you to click on ads.
