How your zakat is worked out

The same method taught in most books of fiqh, done for you step by step.

  1. Add up what you own

Cash, bank balances, gold, silver, trade goods, shares, crypto and money owed to you.

  2. Subtract what's due

Debts and bills you must pay now are taken away.

  3. Compare with nisab

If what's left is at least the value of 612.36 g of silver or 87.48 g of gold, zakat applies.

  4. Pay 2.5%

Once a full lunar year has passed, one fortieth of that wealth is your zakat.

2.5%One fortieth of zakatable wealth
612.36 gSilver nisab, 52.5 tola
87.48 gGold nisab, 7.5 tola

Common questions

What is nisab?

Nisab is the minimum wealth you must own, after debts, for a full lunar year before zakat becomes due. It equals 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, so its value changes with market prices.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Many scholars, especially in the Hanafi school, advise the silver nisab when your wealth is mixed or mostly cash, because it is lower and more of the poor benefit. Others use gold. Follow the scholar you trust.

Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?

In the Hanafi school, yes, on all gold and silver including worn jewellery. Some other schools exempt jewellery in normal personal use. This calculator counts all gold and silver you enter.

Do I pay zakat on my house or car?

No. Your home, car, furniture and personal items are not zakatable. Property bought to resell is counted as business stock.

How is zakat on shares worked out?

If you trade shares, count their full market value. If you hold them long term for dividends, some scholars count only your share of the company's zakatable assets. Entering the full value is the more cautious choice.
